Somebody visiting a solicitor’s website at eleven at night is usually not shopping around.
They have had a letter, or a diagnosis, or a conversation that went badly, and they are trying to work out whether this is the sort of thing you handle and what happens if they call.
That is the state of mind law firm website design has to serve. Not a browser comparing features. A person under some pressure, often on a phone, wanting to know two things: can you help, and what happens next.
Almost every design decision follows from taking that seriously.
Law Firm Website Design: Clear Services, Leaner Pages
Say what you do in the words people use
Practice area pages titled “Contentious Probate” are accurate and unhelpful to someone searching for what to do when a will is being disputed. Lead with the situation, then name the legal service.
Say who the service is for and, just as usefully, who it is not for. A firm that clearly states it does not take a particular kind of case saves everyone a conversation and reads as confident rather than limiting.
Be explicit about what happens after contact. Who calls back, roughly when, and whether the first conversation costs anything. Uncertainty about that is a common reason people close the tab and phone somebody else.
Do not put a long form in front of the decision
Asking for case details before somebody knows whether you can help is the wrong order. Offer a phone number, an email address and a short enquiry form, and let the person choose. That’s key for data collection and building professional trust.
Keep the form to what you genuinely need to route the enquiry. Every additional field is answered by every person who contacts you, so a question that helps in one case out of twenty is paid for by the other nineteen.
Validate inline rather than on submission. Someone typing details about a difficult situation should not lose them to a page reload.
Data collection deserves more care here than elsewhere
An enquiry to a law firm can contain information about health, finances, family circumstances or criminal matters. That is sensitive material arriving through a web form.
Collect the minimum needed at first contact and explain plainly what happens to it. Audit every third-party script on pages carrying enquiry forms, because analytics and session recording tools have a genuine capacity to capture more than anyone intended.
Confirm your specific obligations with qualified legal and data-protection advisers rather than treating a website article as guidance. What is offered here is design practice, not compliance advice.
Accessibility is not optional in this sector
Your visitors disproportionately include people who are elderly, unwell, distressed or dealing with a disability, because those circumstances are what bring people to solicitors.
Work towards WCAG 2.1 Level AA. Semantic headings so screen readers can navigate, keyboard operation throughout, contrast that survives daylight on a phone, descriptive link text rather than “click here”, and error messages that explain what to fix.
Automated testing catches a portion of failures and cannot tell you whether someone can complete an enquiry. Test the enquiry journey with a keyboard and with zoom at 200 per cent, since that is the journey that matters commercially.
Efficient delivery, and honest claims about it
Optimise images, subset fonts, load integrations only on the pages that use them and keep dependencies current. Where performance and environmental impact both apply, treat them as the same lever: reducing unnecessary data transfer and processing supports a faster experience while lowering estimated digital carbon, though environmental figures remain modelled rather than directly measured.
Verify renewable-powered hosting rather than accepting a badge, and do not treat it as a substitute for efficient delivery. It addresses the server portion while your pages govern the rest.
If you publish environmental claims, keep them to what you have measured with a stated method. Firms are held to a high standard on accuracy in their own advertising, and an unsubstantiated sustainability claim sits awkwardly beside that.
Our sustainable web design work treats clarity, accessibility and efficient delivery as one brief.
