Reducing a website’s impact is not one job.

It is a set of decisions made at different moments by different people, most of whom never speak to each other about it.

The designer chooses the imagery. The developer chooses the dependencies. Somebody in marketing adds a tracking script eighteen months later. Nobody is responsible for the total, which is why the total grows.

Reducing digital carbon footprint means putting the question into each of those moments rather than auditing at the end and hoping.

At design level

The largest savings are made before any code exists, and they cost nothing at this stage.

Decide what a page must do and include only what serves it. A page hedging across four purposes is heavier than one with a clear job, and it usually performs worse commercially too.

Agree a page weight budget before the first mockup. Agreed: here it is a constraint that shapes what gets designed. Introduced afterwards it becomes a negotiation, and the hero video is always the exception.

Choose typography deliberately. Two families at most, and treat each additional weight as a file rather than a styling option.

At development level

Ship only what the page uses. Audit dependencies rather than accumulating them, and prefer browser-native solutions where they will do the job.

Semantic HTML costs nothing to download, works without script and gives assistive technology what it needs by default. CSS handles transitions, layout and sticky positioning faster than script will.

Serve images at display dimensions in modern formats, with responsive sources so a phone does not download a desktop asset.

Cache properly. A returning visitor should not re-download what has not changed, and sensible cache headers are among the cheapest improvements available.

At audit level

Measure before and after, under recorded conditions: which device, which connection, first or repeat visit.

Carbon calculators produce modelled estimates from your page weight rather than measurements. Different tools disagree about the same page, so use one consistently, name it, and treat the trend as more meaningful than the absolute figure.

At content and search level

This is where the connection surprises people.

Content built around real questions rather than keyword targets tends to be shorter, clearer and less duplicated. Fewer near-identical pages competing with each other means less to crawl, less to maintain and less to serve.

Where performance and environmental impact both apply, treat them as the same lever: reducing unnecessary data transfer and processing supports a faster experience while lowering estimated digital carbon, though environmental figures remain modelled rather than directly measured.

What this does not do is guarantee search improvements. Speed and mobile usability contribute to page experience, and that is a contribution rather than a lever.

At maintenance level

The stage that determines whether any of the above survives.

Sites regain weight through ordinary work: images uploaded from a phone, plugins added to solve a problem that later disappears, tags for campaigns nobody removed.

Give editors guidance on image sizes. Give every new third-party tool an owner and a review date. Enforce the page weight budget in your build process rather than relying on somebody remembering.

Review quarterly against the baseline. Drift is invisible without comparison, which is why it goes unnoticed for years.

What to say about it afterwards

Environmental claims must be accurate and substantiated. The Competition and Markets Authority’s Green Claims Code sets out what that requires.

Describe what you measured, with which tool, under what conditions, and what changed. Offsetting is a separate activity and is not evidence that your website got lighter.

It may be worthwhile on its own terms, but it is not evidence that your website is lighter. Offsets are a payment made elsewhere and change nothing about what your pages send or what visitors' devices process.

Enforce a page weight budget in your build process, assign owners and review dates to third-party tools, and give editors image guidance. Most regression arrives through content work, so that is where the control belongs.
