Type the phrase into a search engine, and you will find no shortage of agencies claiming it.
Leaf icons. Pledges to plant a tree for every project. A carbon-neutral banner in the footer. It looks convincing, and none of it tells you anything about whether the websites they build are actually light.
There is no certification behind the term. No standard it must meet. Nothing stopping a studio that has never measured a page from using it. Choosing a green web design agency therefore means asking questions that separate evidence from decoration.
Green Web Design Agency: What Makes a Claim Credible?
Two different things share the name
Almost all the confusion comes from here.
- Operational sustainability is how the agency runs itself. Renewable electricity in the office, low-carbon travel, B Corp certification, offsetting. Worthwhile on its own terms and almost entirely unrelated to what they build for you.
- Technical sustainability is the product. Page weight, request counts, efficient code, hosting choices, accessibility. This is the part affecting your website and your visitors.
An agency can be genuinely excellent at the first and ship four-megabyte homepages. The two get conflated in sales conversations, sometimes without anybody intending to mislead, because both are true statements about sustainability.
Ask which one is being described.
Why offsets are not evidence
Tree planting and carbon offsetting are the most visible sustainable agency signals in this market and the least relevant to your website.
An offset is a payment made elsewhere. It does not reduce what your pages send, what your visitors’ devices process, or what your hosting draws. A heavy site with offsets attached is still a heavy site.
That does not make offsetting worthless. It makes it a separate activity from building efficient websites, and an agency presenting it as evidence of technical capability has answered a different question from the one you asked.
The evidence that actually counts
- Before-and-after figures from real projects. Page weight, request count and Core Web Vitals with the test conditions stated. An agency that measures has these to hand.
- Their own website. Run it through a page weight test while you are talking to them. It takes a minute, and it is remarkable how often the result contradicts the pitch.
- A named measurement method. Which carbon estimation tool, tested how, under what conditions. Tools disagree, so consistency matters more than choice.
- Performance budgets in the process. Ask whether one is set before design begins. Introduced afterwards, it is a report; agreed beforehand, it is a constraint that shapes what gets built.
- Hosting specifics. Which provider, what the renewable claim covers, and whether they show documentation rather than a badge.
- Accessibility testing. Which WCAG level, tested how. This overlaps heavily with efficiency and appears in the same procurement questionnaires.
How they talk about carbon figures and green claims.
This is the tell that separates careful from careless.
A credible green web design agency will tell you unprompted that carbon calculators produce modelled estimates rather than measurements, that different tools disagree, and that a figure is only meaningful alongside its method and conditions.
Where performance and environmental impact both apply, they should describe them as the same delivery lever: reducing unnecessary data transfer and processing supports a faster experience while lowering estimated digital carbon, with the environmental side acknowledged as modelled rather than directly measured.
A green web design agency quoting a precise carbon figure without that context either does not understand the modelling or is choosing not to mention it.
The claim that should worry you
If a green web design agency offers to describe your website as carbon neutral, treat it as a warning about them and a risk to you.
Environmental claims must be accurate and substantiated, and the Competition and Markets Authority’s Green Claims Code sets out what that requires. The exposure sits with the business making the claim, which is you rather than them.
A measured reduction with a stated method is defensible, more specific and more persuasive to the kind of client who asks about this in the first place.
Our website sustainability audits lead with measurement, and we would expect every question on this page to be put to us.
